Statement on the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake (Message from the President)

July 31, 2026

I wish to express my deepest condolences for the lives lost in the earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture. I also offer my heartfelt sympathies to all those affected, to their families, and to everyone connected with them.

In the impacted area, amid the severe heat, strenuous efforts are under way to restore the foundations of daily life and the public infrastructure damaged by the earthquake. I express my deep respect and gratitude to all those involved, including those who have worked tirelessly on the ground since the earthquake in search and rescue, recovery and reconstruction assistance, medical care, and other forms of support. I earnestly hope for the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction of the region.

In keeping with our mission as an institution of education and research, we at the University of Tokyo will work in coordination with the relevant organizations to advance the recovery and reconstruction of the affected area, to provide support for students, and to take other needed measures.
